Fill the Boot - Childrens Miracle Network

Kingman, Az -

For the past 7 years, the Pinion Pine Fire District has teamed up with the Love's Travel Stop store #272 during the month of September to collect donations for the Children's Miracle Network in a "fill the boot" drive. All of the money donated goes to an area hospital, in our case Phoenix Children's Hospital. Store #272 has placed 1st in their district of 8 stores four of the last five years totaling roughly $40,000. This year, the goal has been set for $8,500.

Every weekend through the month of September, PNP firefighters will be at the Love's Travel Stop store #272 at Exit 59 on Interstate 40, from 10AM - 3PM, but the store itself is excepting donations 24/7. During the Labor day weekend, PNP firefighters collected $1,364 with a store total of $2,200. If you have the time, come meet the guys and help the kids at Phoenix Children's Hospital.

Structure Fire

On April 23, 2016 at 6:24 pm, Pinion Pine firefighters were dispatched to the area north of Loves Truck Stop for reported smoke in the area. Engine 521 and Brush 516 responded from Fire Station 52 with smoke showing. Engine 521 arrived on scene on E. Early Circle to find an outbuilding on fire which had extended into a stack of hay bales with no immediate exposures threatened. Crews pulled an 1-3/4 attack line and had the fire under control in roughly 7 minutes. Firefighters spent the next hour and a half overhauling the roughly 30 hay bales and outbuilding. Upon our arrival, the home owners had just arrived home to find their shed and hay burning and began suppressing the fire.

Although we do not advise homeowners to take action on their fires, we understand your valuables are at risk and we applaud the quick actions in preventing this fire from extending into the vegetation when winds were blowing roughly 20 miles per hour. The cause of the fire was undetermined and caused roughly $10,000 of damage.

Vehicle vs. Semi Accident

Interstate 40 -

On March 9, 2014 at 8:01 am, firefighters received an alarm for a passenger car vs. semi on Interstate 40 at the 62 mile post westbound. E521 arrived on scene to find a Dodge Challenger in the median upright with moderate front end damage and extensive roof damage.  Both vehicle were traveling westbound when the passenger car struck the rear of the semi trailer.

The passenger vehicle passed under the DOT safety bar on the trailer, shearing the A-post on the passenger side of the vehicle before entering the median where it came to rest.  Luckily there was no passenger in the vehicle and the driver of the vehicle was uninjured but visibly shaken from the collision.  The driver and passenger of the semi were uninjured as well.
The Arizona Department of Public Safety Highway Patrol Division is conducting the investigation.  There were no traffic restrictions and the scene was cleared within an hour.

Evening Lightning Event Keeps Firefighters Busy

Residents in Kingman had an amazing light show last night, August 17th, 2013 when monsoon weather moved in around 3 pm and stuck around until midnight. Beau Jackson, a firefighter with the Pinion Pine Fire District took the opportunity to photograph some of the lightning which left area fire departments busy most of the evening and portions of the community without power for a while.

Pinion Pine firefighters responded to a brush fires about 40 miles east of Kingman yesterday around 3 pm which was started by lightning. 1 engine and 1 chief officer responded to the area of mile marker 88 on Interstate 40 and located a small fire roughly 1/4 mile south of the freeway. Crews were able to contain the fire to a tenth of an acre.

As the weather moved west, lightning traveled through the Pinion Pine Fire District into the City of Kingman causing power outages in Kingman and the Blake Ranch area. The cell continued to move west into Golden Valley where lightning started two brush fires and is believed to have started an outbuilding fire and is being investigated by the Golden Valley Fire District.

Busy Afternoon for Pinion Pine Firefighters

Pinion Pine firefighters had a busy day June 29, 2013 beginning around 2 pm. At 1:57 pm, the first alarm in a series of 6 major incidents was received for a brush fire on Interstate 40 near mile marker 94 which brought the response of Brush 526 and Chief 501. While in route, Chief 501 spotted a second fire along Interstate 40 near the Willow Creek off ramp (Exit 87) and requested the response of Engine 523. Units arrived at both locations and suppressed the fires, holding them to a tenth of an acre.

Shortly after the units returned to quarters, at 5 pm, Chief 501 and Engine 523 were dispatched to the area of mile marker 71 on Interstate 40 for yet another brush fire. Crews were met by a homeowner who led them to the fire which was approximately 1 mile north of the Highway 93 junction. Crews arrived on scene to find a power pole that had been struck by lightning and sparked a quarter acre brush fire. Firefighters secured the scene and waited for the electric company to arrive and disconnect the power from the live pole.  Crews remained on scene for roughly one hour while mop up was completed. During this time, Engine 516 and Engine 526 received an alarm for a reported brush fire on Interstate 40 near D W Ranch Rd (exit 59) but were unable to locate a fire.

Crews wait for the arrival of the power company

While returning to quarters, Engine 523 received yet another alarm for a reported brush fire 4-5 miles south of Interstate 40 near mile marker 95. Once in the area, the crew noticed some smoke 10 miles south of the Interstate. Engine 523 made access at Jolly Rd (exit 102) and began working their way to the fire when further updates were received that a local rancher in the area was conducting a controlled burn. Engine 523 was canceled by State Fire and cleared the scene.

Once again, while Engine 523 was returning to quarters, E511, Chief 501 and Engine 523 received an alarm at 10 pm for a tractor trailer with smoke coming from the motor compartment and trailer brakes at the Loves Truck Stop near the fuel island. Chief 501 and Engine 511 arrived on scene to find that the vehicle had already been extinguished by store personnel. An attack line was pulled and the vehicle was further cooled off. Engine 511 crew used a thermal imaging camera to thoroughly check the vehicle for any additional heat. Units were on scene for 30 minutes and minimal damage was done to the tractor trailer.

A burning body was found early Monday morning by Pinion Pine Fire Department personnel responding to a fire report about 5 miles east of Kingman, Ariz.

Mohave County Sheriff Tom Sheahan said the homicide victim was a black man between the ages of 25 to 35. He weighed 200 pounds and was between 5 feet 9 inches and 6 feet tall.

The body was found along an Interstate 40 frontage road near DW Ranch Road just after 7 a.m.
Sheahan said the man was likely killed elsewhere and transported to the location. A gas can was found at the scene.

Sheahan said the body was discovered facedown in the dirt. The man had short black hair, a short beard and moustache and was wearing a blue denim shirt, black pants and black dress shoes with laces.

"The victim's left upper chest has a large cross tattoo and below the tattoo 'the truth hurts' is written," a news release said. "The victim was wearing a large stud earring in his left ear."

Autopsy results are pending. Anyone with information about the ongoing case is asked to call the sheriff's office at (928) 753-0753, or Silent Witness at (928) 753-1234.

Early Morning Structure Fire

On December 28, 2012 at 2:42 AM, Engine 511 and Chief 501 recieved an alarm for a possible structure fire in the walls of a residence on Alta Dr. Upon the arrival of Engine 511, there was nothing showing and the homeowners waving around to the rear of the structure. Crews found an exterior wall in the rear that had caught fire after ashes from a fireplace were placed in the area and thought to be out. The container caught on fire and reached the wall where it spread approximately halfway up the wall. Crews removed portions of the siding and wall to check for further extension. This fire could have been avoided, placing your fireplace ashes in a metal container away from the house is the preferred method of disposing them. In this incident, the homeowners thought their ashes were well cold which started a fire while everyone was sleeping on a night that was in the 20's. Damages to the structure were low and no injuries were reported.

Firefighters Collect for the Childrens Miracle Network

On September 9, September 16 and September 23, 2012, Pinion Pine firefighters spent the day at the Loves Truck Stop (Interstate 40, exit 59) collecting donations for the Children's Miracle Network charity. The Children's Miracle Network is one of North America's leading children's charities that raises money for local hospitals to help children and their families deal with common illnesses such as asthma or to fight bigger challenges such as cancer. Since 2011, the CMN has raised more than $4.3 billion.  We are happy to say we have assisted the Loves Corporation and the Children's Miracle Network with raising $1,600 plus the stores total in an effort to reach our goal of $11,053. We appreciate all the help from the everyday people that passed through and made a donation from the change in their pocket to the $20 bills and look forward to raising even more in September 2013.

Grant helps Pinion Pines FD get to crash victims - Kingman Daily Miner

 fuel-fed fires at the airport.

"Firefighters are finding that they're needing new tools to keep up with the safety standards of today's newer car models.

The 4,000 pounds of steel and metal that make up the average sedan are molded into crumple zones to protect drivers in crashes of speeds of around 40 miles an hour. But with manufacturers using stronger materials, responders are finding it harder to cut through the mangled metals when trying to free trapped occupants from a crash.

The Pinion Pines Fire Department is responsible for more than 80 miles of highway, from Interstate 40 at milepost 58 to the western county line and U.S. 93 to Wikieup. The department responds to anywhere from two to five accidents a week, said training officer Danny Zandvliet.

The department was recently awarded a $10,800 grant from State Farm Insurance to update its rescue tools, commonly referred to as the Jaws of Life. Zandvliet said many of the department's tools are 15 years old.

"Fifteen-year-old tools can cut 15-year-old cars, but they can't cut today's," he said.

Today's cars are engineered with materials that can withstand an average of 200,000 pounds of force. Many of the department's tools currently max out at around 70,000 pounds, Zandvliet explained.

The Jaws of Life refer to two separate tools; A cutter, that can cut through metal, and a spreader, which, as it name also infers, can spread car doors that have been jammed shut or other pieces of a mangled car. The tools are gas powered but are also available in electric versions.

When a patient needs to be extricated from a car, rescuers will first disconnect the car's battery. This prevents, among other things, the air bag from deploying if it was triggered in the crash but didn't actually go off.

"I don't think people realize how many times an air bag doesn't deploy," Zandvliet said.

Firefighters next break out the windshield and other windows to minimize flying glass during rescue efforts. They also flatten the tires and "crib," or stabilize, the wheels so they don't move. Then they'll get to work removing the patient. Zandvliet said around 30 percent of people who need to be rescued from inside cars actually only have minor injuries; They just can't get out of the twisted wreckage, he said.

The new tools purchased with the grant will be of great assistance in tackling the stronger metals used to make newer cars, he added. Earlier this month, the department responded to an accident involving a BMW in which the driver ultimately had to be removed through the back because rescuers couldn't get to him another way. Response times are also of the essence. When responding to calls of U.S. 93, the nearest alternate responding agency is 25 minutes away, he said.

Vendors from several different manufacturers visited the department before Christmas for the firefighters to test out the new tools. The department is looking to spend around $25,000 in total with purchases made by January."
